When topological degree theory (of Brouwer type in finite-dimensional and of Schauder type in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces) became a fashionable part of nonlinear analysis about 50 years ago, \textit{H. Amann} and \textit{S. A. Weiss} proved in [Math. Z. 130, 39--54 (1973; Zbl 0249.55004)] that this degree is uniquely determined by three axioms: homotopy invariance of maps, additivity of domains, and normalization of the identity. In this paper, the authors develop a parallel result for a degree theory for locally compact perturbations of \(C^1\) Fredholm maps developed by the first and third author [Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2006, Article 64764, 20 p. (2006; Zbl 1090.47049)]. A~crucial ingredient is here the concept of orientation introduced also by the first and third author [Ann. Sci. Math. Qué. 22, No. 2, 131--148 (1998; Zbl 1058.58502); Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal. 16, No. 2, 279--306 (2000; Zbl 1007.47026)]. This nice paper, written by three leading specialists in the field, may also be regarded as a survey on contemporary degree theory.
