Let \(\mathcal{R}\) be the hyperfinite \(II_1\)-factor. Let \(L(H)\) be the \(*\)-algebra of all bounded operators on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space \(H\) and let \((\mathcal{I},\|\cdot\|_{\mathcal{I}})\) be an ideal in \(L(H)\) equipped with a Banach norm which is distinct from the Schatten-von Neumann ideal \(L_p(H)\), \(1\leq p < 2\). \textit{F. A. Sukochev} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 124, No. 5, 1517--1527 (1996; Zbl 0865.46052)] has shown that {\parindent=0.8cm \begin{itemize}\item[(i)] \(L_2(H)\) is the only Banach ideal in \(L(H)\) isomorphically embeddable into \(L_p(\mathcal R)\) for \(p\geq2\). \item[(ii)] \(L_p(H)\) does not isomorphically embed into \(L_p(\mathcal{R})\) for \(1\leq p< 2\). \item[(iii)] \(L_q(H)\) isomorphically embeds into \(L_p(\mathcal{R})\) for \(1\leq p < q < 2\). \end{itemize}} The precise form of the main question studied in this article is as follows. Which Banach ideals in \(L(H)\) admit an isomorphic embedding into \(L_p(\mathcal{R})\)? The main topic of this paper is the study of (symmetric) subspaces of the noncommutative analogue of the space \(L_p(0, 1)\), i.e., the space \(L_p(\mathcal{R},\tau)\) of \(\tau\)-measurable operators affiliated with the hyperfinite \(II_1\)-factor \(\mathcal{R}\) of finite \(p\)-norm. Indeed, the authors prove that \(\mathcal{I}\) isomorphically embeds into an \(L_p\)-space \(L_p(\mathcal{R})\), \(1\leq p < 2\), if its commutative core (that is, the Calkin space for \(\mathcal{I}\)) isomorphically embeds into \(L_p(0,1)\). Furthermore, the authors prove that an Orlicz ideal \(L_\mathcal{M}(H)\neq L_p(H)\) isomorphically embeds into \(L_p(\mathcal{R})\), \(1\leq p < 2\), if and only if it is an interpolation space for the Banach couple \((L_p(H), L_2(H))\). Finally, they consider isomorphic embeddings of \((\mathcal{I}, \|\cdot \|_{\mathcal{I}})\) into \(L_p\)-spaces associated with arbitrary finite von Neumann algebras.
