The authors consider the interior transmission eigenvalue (ITE) problem. \(\lambda\in\mathbb{C}\) is called an eigenvalue of ITE problem if there is a non-zero pair of functions \(\left( u_{1},u_{2}\right) \in[ H^{1}\left( \Omega\right) ]^{2},\) \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^{d},\) \(d\geq2,\) satisfying the system \[ \begin{cases} \operatorname{div}\left( A_{1}\nabla u_{1}\right) -\lambda\Sigma_{1} u_{1}=0\text{ in }\Omega,\\ \operatorname{div}\left( A_{2}\nabla u_{2}\right) -\lambda\Sigma_{2}u_{2}=0\text{ in }\Omega, \end{cases} \tag{1} \] with boundary conditions \[ u_{1}=u_{2},\text{ \;}A_{1}\nabla u_{1}\cdot\nu=\text{\;}A_{2}\nabla u_{2}\cdot\nu\text{ on }\Gamma,\tag{2} \] where \(A_{1}\), \(A_{2}\) are two real symmetric uniformly elliptic matrix-valued functions in \(\Omega\), \(\Sigma_{1},\Sigma_{2}\) are two bounded positive functions in \(\Omega\) that are bounded from below by a positive constant, \(\Gamma=\partial\Omega\) and \(\nu\) is the outward normal vector on \(\Gamma\). The authors prove the discreteness of the spectrum of (1) and (2) with information only near the boundary. The results of the paper extend the previous discreteness results of \textit{A.-S. Bonnet-Ben Dhia} et al. [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 349, No. 11--12, 647--651 (2011; Zbl 1244.35099)], \textit{E. Lakshtanov} and \textit{B. Vainberg} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 44, No. 1, 341--354 (2012; Zbl 1238.81172)]. The proofs are based on the multiplier technique and on the Fourier analysis.
