The author shows: Theorem. For each dimension \(d>5\) there is a finite group \(G\) which acts continuously and faithfully on \(S^n\) but is not isomorphic to a subgroup of O\((n+1)\). The proof of the theorem makes use of a result of \textit{R. J. Milgram} [Lect. Notes Math. 1126, 127--158 (1985; Zbl 0572.57012)]. It is not known whether there are smooth actions as in the theorem. The assumption that \(G\) is finite is crucial, as it is easy to construct actions of infinite groups as in the theorem.
