The author proves two results concerning the relation between the behaviour of the restriction of a Hamiltonian to a subset of a symplectic manifold and the dynamics of the subset under the Hamiltonian. The \textit{Hofer distance} between closed subsets of a symplectic manifold is defined as the infimum of the Hofer norms of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms mapping one subset to the other. In Theorem 1.3, the author gives an alternative formula for the Hofer distance: one can reduce to take the restrictions of Hamiltonians to one of the subsets. The motivation comes from some energy-capacity inequalities proved in [\textit{M. S. Borman} and \textit{M. McLean}, Compos. Math. 150, No. 12, 2143--2183 (2014; Zbl 1322.53082)] and [\textit{V. Humilière} et al., Duke Math. J. 164, No. 4, 767--799 (2015; Zbl 1327.53109)]. In the second section, the author obtains new vanishing results for the Hofer distance. The results are based on [the author, J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 16, No. 8, 1571--1616 (2014; Zbl 1307.53071)]. More precisely, the vanishing is estabilished for non-Lagrangian half-dimensional submanifolds in Corollary 2.7, and for singular analytic subvarieties in Kähler manifolds in Theorem 2.15.
