The authors present a method to describe the dynamics of an ion confined in a realistic finite range trap. They model this realistic potential with a solvable one, namely, the modified Pöschl-Teller potential, and obtain the dynamical variables (raising and lowering operators) of this system. Moreover, they have proposed a scheme for preparation of a special family of nonlinear coherent states that could be generated as the stationary states of the center-of-mass motion of a laser-driven trapped ion in a finite range gap while interacting with a bichromatic laser field. The ion is decoupled from the driving laser field when the motional state is the nonlinear coherent state. Physical properties for these nonlinear coherent states of ionic vibrational motion and their dependence on the finite range of potential are studied in detail.
