In [J. Inst. Math. Jussieu 5, No. 2, 309--332 (2006; Zbl 1092.37003)], \textit{S. Popa} introduced the notion of quotients of Bernoulli shifts in order to obtain an infinite family of measure preserving ergodic a.e. free orbits in equivalent actions of a countable group \(\Gamma\) with the relative property (T) over an infinite normal subgroup \(\Lambda\). Let \(A\) be a countable abelian group and let \(\widehat{A}\) be its dual (character) group. The first and the main aim of the paper is to prove this without a normality assumption on the subgroup \(\Lambda\): Suppose that \(\Gamma\) is a countable discrete group with the relative property (T) over an infinite subgroup \(\Lambda\) and let \(A\) and \(A'\) be countable infinite abelian groups. Then \(\sigma\widehat{A}\) and \(\sigma\widehat{A'}\) are orbit equivalent if and only if \(A\simeq A'\).
