The author studies the stratification of \({\mathbb P}^n\) via \(Y\)-rank is studied in the case when \(Y\) is a smooth curve. If \(Y\) is a rational normal curve, this gives the stratification by rank of binary forms, which has been described in a previous paper by the author and \textit{M. Seiguer} [Found. Comput. Math. 11, No. 1, 65--78 (2011; Zbl 1211.14059)]. For curves embedded via a complete linear system of degree \(d\) with \(d\geq 2r+10g(C)-3\), a complete description of \(C_r\) and \(\overline C_r\) is given, where \(C_r=\{ x\in {\mathbb P}^n \mid Y-\mathrm{rank}(x)=r\}\). For elliptic normal curves a description of all strata is obtained.
