In [J. Funct. Anal. 258, No. 10, 3452--3468 (2010; Zbl 1206.46018)], the authors gave sufficient conditions so that certain nonreflexive subspaces of \(L_1(\mu)\) can be renormed to have the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In the article under review, the authors consider similar questions in the setting of non-commutative \(L_1\)-spaces associated with finite von Neumann algebras. In particular, the authors prove that, if \(\mathcal{M}\) is a finite von Neumann algebra on a separable Hilbert space and \(L_1(\mathcal{M})\) is the non-commutative \(L_1\)-space associated with \(\mathcal{M}\), there exists an equivalent norm \(|||\cdot|||\) on \(L_1(\mathcal{M})\) such that, if \(C\) is a nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset of \(L_1(\mathcal{M})\) that is relatively compact for the measure topology (defined by \textit{E.\ Nelson} in [J.\ Funct.\ Anal.\ 15, 103--116 (1974; Zbl 0292.46030)]), then every \(|||\cdot|||\)-nonexpansive self-mapping of \(C\) has a fixed point. As a corollary, if \(X\) is a closed subspace of \(L_1(\mathcal{M})\) whose unit ball is relatively compact for the measure topology, then \(X\) endowed with the \(|||\cdot|||\)-norm has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings.
