In this paper the authors prove two main results on fusion categories over the field of complex numbers and subfactors. One of them is the determination of the possible numbers in the interval \((2, 76/33)\) which can occur as Frobenius-Perron dimension of a simple object in a fusion category \(\mathcal C\): the result says that there are 5 possibilities, namely \((\sqrt{7} + \sqrt{3})/2\), \(\sqrt{5}\), \(1 + 2 \cos{(2\pi/7)}\), \((1 + \sqrt{5})/\sqrt{2}\), \((1 + \sqrt{13})/2\). For each of these numbers explicit examples of fusion categories with a simple object satisfying the corresponding requirement are given; in the case of the number \((\sqrt{7} + \sqrt{3})/2\) a new example of a fusion category, which satisfies the condition, is constructed in an Appendix written by \textit{V. Ostrik}. The other main result states that is \(\Gamma\) is a connected graph and \(\Gamma_n\) is the sequence of graphs obtained by adding a \(2\)-valent tree of length \(n - | \Gamma |\) to \(\Gamma\) at a vertex \(v\), then either the family \((\Gamma_n)\) consists of Dynkin diagrams of type \(A_n\) or \(D_n\) or there are only finitely many graphs within the family \((\Gamma_n)\) which are principal graphs of subfactors. This generalizes previous work of \textit{M. Asaeda} [Int. J. Math. 18, No.~2, 191--202 (2007; Zbl 1117.46041)] and \textit{M. Asaeda} and \textit{S. Yasuda} [Commun. Math. Phys. 286, No. 3, 1141--1157 (2009; Zbl 1180.46051)]. Both main theorems are deduced by respective purely number theoretic results that are also proved in the paper under review.
