Numerical analysis of a shape optimization problem for paper machine headbox is studied. The point is to compute the optimal shape which gives a prescribed velocity profile on the outlet part. The flow of the fluid used for producing paper is governed by the generalized Navier-Stokes equations, including the algebraic turbulence model introduced by Prandtl in 1925. Some particular boundary conditions are imposed, suggested by the Forcheimer equation (the analogy of Darcy law for high speed flows). The discretize-then-differentiate approach is considered (using the true gradient of the discrete cost functional) to get a discrete solution. The finite-element method is used and the convergence of the discrete solution to the original solution is obtained. The shape optimization and very interesting numerical results are given in the last part of the paper.
