It is well-known that the Riemann mapping theorem does not hold for domains in several complex variables; already Poincaré noticed that the \(n\)-dimensional polydisk \(\Delta^n\) and the \(n\)-dimensional unit ball are not biholomorphically equivalent. On the other hand, in 1977, \textit{J. E. Fornaess} and \textit{E. L. Stout} [Am. J. Math. 99, 933--960 (1977; Zbl 0384.32004)] proved that, for any \(n\)-dimensional complex manifold \(Y\), there exists a locally biholomorphic \(m\)-to-one map (with \(m\leq 2+(2n+1)4^n\)) of \(\Delta^n\) onto \(Y\). \textit{E. Ligocka} [Ann. Pol. Math. 82, No. 2, 127--135 (2003; Zbl 1057.30019)] was able to replace \(\Delta^n\) by a product of finitely connected \(1\)-dimensional domains, with a worse estimate on \(m\); and later on, \textit{P. Liczberski} and the author of the present paper were able to get a better estimate on~\(m\), at the same time enlarging the class of \(1\)-dimensional domains that can be used in the product [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 353, No. 1, 85--87 (2009; Zbl 1162.32012); Ann. Pol. Math. 85, No. 2, 135--143 (2005; Zbl 1087.30017)]. This paper contains several interesting results in this area. First of all, the author is able to construct a \(12\)-to-one locally biholomorphic map from any (finitely or) countably connected plane domain onto the disk, thus extending Ligocka's result to the product of arbitrary (finitely or) countably connected domains. Then the author is able to replace \(\Delta^n\) in the Fornaess-Stout theorem by a domain which is not necessarily a product, but simply contains a (biholomorphic image of a) polydisk touching the boundary in a suitable way, with an estimate on~\(m\) better than Ligocka's. He also proves that such domains can be mapped locally biholomorphically \(3^n\)-to-one onto~\(\mathbb{C}^n\), but possibly his most impressive result is Theorem~4, showing that every bounded domain~\(D\) admitting a supporting hyperplane intersecting the boundary of~\(D\) in exactly one point~\(a\) and containing a small cone with vertex~\(a\) can be mapped locally biholomorphically finitely-to-one onto~\(\mathbb{C}^n\).
