For any two complex numbers, one can define as usual their arithmetic-geometric mean. Due to the ambiguity of the square root, this is a multi-valued function. Given one value, Gauss determined all its values and moreover showed that they are closely related to certain elliptic integrals. Generalizing this, Borchardt defined an arithmetic-geometric mean of 4 complex numbers. In the present paper the author investigates this function. Again it is multi-valued and its valued are studied using the theory of theta functions of genus 2. This can be considered as a 2-dimensional generalization of part of Gauss's work. Moreover, the definition is related to duplication formulae of genus-2 theta functions.
