Let \(F = G/P = U/K\) be a flag manifold, where \(G\) is a complex semi-simple Lie group, \(P\subset G\) is a parabolic subgroup, \(U \subset G\) is maximal compact and \(K = U \cap P\). Some formulas for the first and second variations of the energy functional of maps from a one-dimensional complex manifold into \(F\) are derived. The notion of holomorphic-horizontal curves was introduced in [\textit{R. L. Bryant}, Duke Math. J. 52, 223--261 (1985; Zbl 0582.58011)]. One of the main contributions here is to investigate the stability of these maps with respect to any invariant metric on \(F\). The main technique is to compare an invariant metric with a Kähler invariant metric [\textit{A. Borel}, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 40, 1147--1151 (1954; Zbl 0058.16002); \textit{A. Lichnerowicz}, Sympos. Math., Roma 3, Probl. Evolut. Sist. solare, Nov. 1968 e Geometria, Febb. 1969, 341--402 (1970; Zbl 0193.50101)]. For general invariant metrics, the classification of the invariant almost Hermitian structures for the maximal flag manifold is used [\textit{L. A. B. San Martin} and \textit{C. J. C. Negreiros}, Adv. Math. 178, No.~2, 277--310 (2003; Zbl 1044.53053)]. At the end, the stability of these holomorphic-horizontal curves is related with the Einstein invariant metrics on \(F\).
