A nilpotent Lie group which admits (resp., does not admit) a left-invariant Ricci soliton metric is called an Einstein nilradical (resp., a non-Einstein nilradical). A nilpotent Lie algebra is said to be an Einstein nilradical (resp., a non-Einstein nilradical) if its Lie algebra has the corresponding property. The author considers the question how the Einstein and non-Einstein nilradicals are distributed among nilpotent Lie algebras. The author restricts the study to the case of 2-step nilpotent Lie groups. In this case it is known that a generic Lie algebra is an Einstein nilradical. For non-generic algebras the author constructs many new families of non-isomorphic, non-Einstein nilradicals.
