The author is interested here in the maximal subgroups, especially the nilpotent and locally nilpotent maximal subgroups of the multiplicative group \(D^*\) of a division ring \(D\). We state a representative selection of the author's results. Theorem 2.2. Suppose \(D\) is algebraic over its centre \(F\) and contains an algebraic closure of \(F\). Then \(D^*\) contains no locally nilpotent maximal subgroups. Corollary 2.3. If \(D\) is the division ring of real quaternions, then \(D^*\) contains no locally nilpotent maximal subgroup and no maximal subgroup that is the multiplicative group of a division subring of \(D\). Theorem 3.1. Suppose \(D\) is non-commutative with its centre \(F\) finite. If \(M\) is a nilpotent maximal subgroup of \(D^*\) that is algebraic over \(F\), then \(M\) is the multiplicative group of a maximal subfield of \(D\).
