This paper investigates existence and qualitative properties of coexistence states for a class of two-species Lotka-Volterra competition-diffusion models, by considering an associated shadow system and then exploring the connection between both models. First, the paper establishes existence of positive solutions to the shadow system for small interspecific coefficient values and all the values of the migration rates. Otherwise, it is shown that there always exists some migration rates for which the shadow system has not any coexistence state. As a consequence, if the interspecific coefficient of the invading species is small enough, then fast diffusion of the invader can drive to a coexistence state for the Lotka-Volterra reaction-diffusion model.
