Let \(G\) be a periodic group. The `spectrum' of \(G\) is the set \(\varpi(G)\) of the orders of elements of \(G\); \(G\) is said to be in the class \(\mathcal P_n\) if \(\varpi(G)=\{2^i\mid i=0,1,\dots,n\}\cup\{3\}\). The main result of the paper under review is Theorem 1 which asserts that groups in \(\mathcal P_3\) are locally finite (it was previously known that groups in \(\mathcal P_0\), \(\mathcal P_1\) and \(\mathcal P_2\) are locally finite). In Theorem 2 the author describes the structure of locally finite groups in \(\mathcal P_n\) (if \(n>0\) they are solvable groups of derived length at least \(2\) and at most \(4\)). Using a result by \textit{D. Sonkin} [``On groups of large exponents \(n\) and \(n\)-periodic products'', Ph.D. Thesis, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee (2005)] the author shows that for every \(n\geq 48\) there are non locally finite groups in \(\mathcal P_n\).
