Let \({\mathbb B}^n\) denote the unit ball in \({\mathbb C}^n\) equipped with the Bergman metric. The author considers a holomorphic embedding \(F(z)=\bigl(A(z),B(z)\bigr)\) from the product \({\mathbb B}^m\times {\mathbb B}^m\) into \({\mathbb B}^n\), isometric up to a normalization constant \(\lambda \). There are two trivial such embeddings: \(F_1(z)=\bigl(0,I_{n,m}(z)\bigr)\) with \(\lambda ={m+1\over n+1}\), and \(F_2(z)=\bigl(I_{n,m}(z),I_{n,m}(z)\bigr)\) with \(\lambda =2{m+1\over n+1}\), where \(I_{n,m}:{\mathbb C}^n\to {\mathbb C}^m\) (\(n\leq m\)) is the canonical embedding. The author proves that, for \(2n>m\geq n\), they are the only holomorphic isometric embeddings up to unitary transformations. Considering Kähler potentials one proves first that \[ \bigl(1-\|A(z)\|^2\bigr)\bigl(1-\|B(z)\|^2\bigr)=\bigl(1-\|z\|^2\bigr)^{\lambda {n+1\over m+1}}. \] By using an extension result by Mok it is proven that such an embedding can be extended across the unit sphere \(\partial {\mathbb B}^n\). It follows that \(k=\lambda {n+1\over m+1}\) is an integer and further, by using Schwarz's lemma for holomorphic maps, that \(k=1\) or 2. For \(k=2\), one obtains that \(A(z)=B(z)=I_{n,m}(z)\) up to unitary transformations. The case \(k=1\) requires an elaborated proof.
