Random tessellations stable with respect to iteration (STIT) have been introduced in [\textit{W. Nagel} and \textit{V. Weiss}, Adv. Appl. Probab. 37, No.~4, 859--883 (2005; Zbl 1098.60012)]. These tessellations result from the process of cell division akin to fragmentation models. The authors study STIT tessellations by means of a new technique based on martingales and the general theory of martingale problems for pure-jump Markov processes. The authors show how this technique yields second-order properties and limit theorems for various integral-geometric characteristics of stationary and isotropic STIT tessellations in dimensions higher than two. The attention is focused on cumulative intrinsic volumes of all orders for the collection of so-called maximal polytopes in the tessellation, which are in codimension 1 the cell-separating facets introduced during the random cell division process. In sharp contrast with the planar case considered in [\textit{T. Schreiber} and \textit{C. Thäle}, Adv. Appl. Probab. 42, No. 4, 913--935 (2010; Zbl 1221.60008)], the higher dimensional model satisfies limit theorems with non-Gaussian limits.
