Let \(\mathbb{B}\) denote the unit ball in \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\) and \(\left\|\cdot \right\| _{p}\) be the norm for \(L^{p}(\partial \mathbb{B})\), where \(1\leq p\leq \infty \). The authors obtain an integral formula for the best constant \(\mathcal{K}_{p}(x;l)\) in the inequality \(\left| \left\langle \nabla u(x),l\right\rangle \right| \leq \mathcal{K}_{p}(x;l)\left\| u\right\| _{p}\), where \(x\in \mathbb{B}\), \(l\in \partial \mathbb{B}\) and \(u\) is some function in \(L^{p}(\partial \mathbb{B})\) extended to \(\mathbb{B}\) by means of its Poisson integral. When \(p\in \{1,2\}\) this leads to explicit formulae for the best constant \(\mathcal{K}_{p}(x)\) in the inequality \(\left| \nabla u(x)\right| \leq \mathcal{K}_{p}(x)\left\| u\right\| _{p}\), and to the observation that \(\mathcal{K}_{p}(x)\) coincides with \(\mathcal{K}_{p}(x;x/\left\| x\right\| )\). This conclusion is related to a conjecture of \textit{D. Khavinson} [Can. Math. Bull. 35, No. 2, 218--220 (1992; Zbl 0776.31004)]. Reviewer's remark: There is some (limited) overlap with work of \textit{M. P. Armitage} and \textit{D. H. Aldred} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 253, No. 2, 651--670 (2001; Zbl 0969.31004)]. Corollary 3.2 of the present paper corresponds to the case \(m=1\) of Theorem 2 in the earlier one. Also, the case \(p=1\) of inequality (2.7) in Theorem 2.1 (see also (3.3)) corresponds to the case \(m=1\) of Theorem 1 in the earlier paper. However, the focus and methods of the two papers are substantially different.
