The algebra generated by the operators of multiplication by piecewise continuous functions and by the Fourier convolution operators with piecewise continuous symbols acting on \(L^2({\mathbb R})\) is studied. All irreducible representations of this algebra are found. The Jacobson topology on the set of these representations is described. The algebra of all Fredholm symbols is described, a formula for the Fredholm index is found for all elements of the algebra. Notice that this algebra (even in the more general setting of \(L^p({\mathbb R})\) with \(1<p<\infty\)) was completely studied by \textit{R. Duduchava} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 10, 505--530 (1987; Zbl 0621.47029)] and by \textit{S. Roch} and \textit{B. Silbermann} [Algebras of convolution operators and their image in the Calkin algebra. Rep., Akad. Wiss. DDR, Karl-Weierstrass-Inst. Math. 05/1990 (1990; Zbl 0717.47019)]. The results of the latter report concerning the above algebra are also reproduced in Section 5.6 of the recent monograph [\textit{S. Roch, P. Santos} and \textit{B. Silbermann}, Non-commutative Gelfand theories. A tool-kit for operator theorists and numerical analysts. Universitext. Berlin: Springer (2011; Zbl 1209.47002)].
