Motivated by the characterization of compact sets as those contained in the convex hull of a norm null sequence, \textit{D. P. Sinha} and \textit{A. K. Karn} [``Compact operators whose adjoints factor through subspaces of \(l_p\)'', Stud. Math. 150, No. 1, 17--33 (2002; Zbl 1008.46008)] defined that a subset \(K\) of a Banach space \(E\) is relatively \(p\)-compact if \(K\subset\{\sum_na_nx_n:\;(a_n)\in B_{\ell_{p'}}\}\), for some sequence \((x_n)\in\ell_p(E)\). When \(p=\infty\) the space \(\ell_p(E)\) is replaced by \(c_0(E)\) and \(\infty\)-compact sets are the usual compact sets. From this concept of \(p\)-compact sets it is plain to consider \(p\)-compact operators (as those that map the unit ball into a relatively \(p\)-compact set) and the \(p\)-approximation property (fulfilled by the spaces whose identity can be approximated by finite rank operators uniformly on every relatively \(p\)-compact set). The article under review deals with two notions related with \(p\)-compacity and holomorphic mappings. Firstly, the authors naturally consider that a holomorphic function \(f\) between Banach spaces \(E\) and \(F\) is \(p\)-compact if for each \(x\in E\) there exists a neighborhood \(V_x\) such that \(f(V_x)\) is relatively \(p\)-compact in \(F\). They study some properties of this kind of functions and present geometric conditions that assure the \(p\)-compacity of a given holomorphic mapping. Secondly, they study in spaces of holomorphic functions the topology \(\tau_{op}\) of uniform convergence on \(p\)-compact subsets of \(U\). They prove that a Banach space \(E\) has the \(p\)-approximation property if and only if the space \(\mathcal H(E)\) (of holomorphic functions on \(E\)) endowed with the \(\tau_{op}\)-topology has the approximation property. The article finishes with a number of problems for future research.
