The aim of the paper under review is to show that a large hereditary \(\ell_1\)-structure in a Banach space does not imply in general any asymptotic one. More precisely, the authors prove that for every countable ordinal \(\xi\) there exists a separable hereditarily indecomposable reflexive space \(X_{\xi}\) with hereditary \(\ell_1\)-index greater than \(\omega^\xi\) such that \(X_{\xi}\) does not admit an \(\ell_1\)-spreading model. Moreover, the dual \(X_{\xi}^{*}\) has hereditary \(c_0\)-index greater than \(\omega^\xi\) and does not admit \(c_0\) as a spreading model. For the construction of the spaces \(X_{\xi}\), the method of attractors introduced in [\textit{S. A. Argyros} and \textit{A. Tolias}, ``Indecomposability and unconditionality in duality'', Geom. Funct. Anal. 14, No.~2, 247--282 (2004; Zbl 1069.46002)] is used.
