In this paper, it is shown that the passage from model categories to derived categories is a weak kind of double pseudofunctor between double categories; the two kinds of morphism between model categories are the left and right Quillen functors, and they pass to left and right derived functors. In this context, composites of left and right derived functors can be compared by using the theory of conjunctions and mates in double categories. Two composites are isomorphic when a specific natural transformation is an iosomorphism. Several examples are discussed.
