An inverse problem of determining an unknown coefficient of a second order hyperbolic equation in a bounded, smooth domain, from partial dynamic boundary measurements, is studied. The main difficulty which appears in boundary measurements is that the formulation of the considered boundary value problem involves unknown boundary values. Using as weights particular background solutions constructed by a geometric control method, an asymptotic formula for calculating the unknown coefficient from the knowledge of the difference between the local Dirichlet to Neumann maps is derived.
