The existence of invariant tori is extremely important in many physical systems, playing a role as barriers to chaotic dynamics. This paper discusses the existence of real invariant tori, on which the flow is conjugate to a rotation with a rotation number equal to a quadratic irrational. The KAM theory is concerned with the persistence of invariant tori under perturbations. One assumes the isoenergetic nondegeneracy condition, which requires that the rate at which orbits wind around changes monotonically as one passes from one orbit to another in the direction of action variables. Here, the author presents a renormalization group transformation study of the existence of invariant tori for a general class of one-parameter families of two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian flows for which the isoenergetic degeneracy condition is violated for at least one value of the parameter (shearless invariant tori). The author's results show that the renormalization group transformation can be successfully used to prove KAM results, the existence results in KAM theory depending now on the possibility of translating a Hamiltonian onto the local stable manifold of the renormalization.
