      Let \(A = \{ a_1, a_2,\dots \}\) and \(B = \{ b_1, b_2,\dots \}\) be nondecreasing infinite sequences of nonnegative integers, and \(c > 0\). For \(n = 0,1,2,\dots\) let \(r(n) = r(n,A,B)\) denote the number of solutions of the inequality \[ a_i + b_j \leq n \quad (a_i \in A, b_j \in B). \] Montgomery and Vaughan showed that if \(A \equiv B\), then \[ r(n) = cn + o(n^{1/4})\tag{*} \] cannot be valid. Let \[ A(n) = \sum_{a \leq n, a \in A} 1 \quad \text{and}\quad B(n) = \sum_{b \leq n, b \in B} 1. \] It is proved that for \(a_i - b_i = o(a_i^{1/2})\) and \(A(n) - B(n) = O(1)\) (*) cannot hold.
