Let \(f:\mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{C}\) be a periodic function with period \(2\pi\) in each variable and of bounded variation in the sense of Vitali over \([0,2\pi]^n\) with the total variation \(V(f;[0,2\pi]^n).\) In case of \(f\) being Lebesgue integrable over the \(n\)-dimensional torus \([0,2\pi)^n,\) denote by \(\widehat f(k_1,\ldots,k_n)\) the multiple Fourier coefficients of \(f,\) where \((k_1,\ldots,k_n)\in \mathbb{Z}^n.\) The authors give a straightforward proof of the estimate \[ | \widehat f(k_1,\ldots,k_n)| \leq {V(f;[0,2\pi]^n) \over (2\pi)^n \prod_{j=1}^n k_j}, \] provided \(k_j\not= 0,\) \(j=1,\ldots,n.\) Both the order of magnitude and the constant in this estimate are exact.
