Let \(d>1\) be a positive square-free integer, and let \(h\) denote the class number of \({\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{d})\). Starting from the well-known fact that \(h\) is odd if and only if \(d\) is of the form \(s\), \(2q\) or \(qr\) where \(s,q,r\) are primes and \(q\equiv r\equiv 3\pmod{4}\), the author provides necessary and sufficient conditions for \(h=1\), based on the solvability of certain Pellian equations. The parameters occurring in the Pellian equations depend only on \(d\), and they are explicitly given.
