Let \(\psi: \mathbb R \to \mathbb C\) be an infinitely often differentiable function in \(L^2\). Let \(\{\psi_\lambda\}_{\lambda\in I}\) denote a finite linearly independent subfamily of the wavelet system \(\{2^{j/2}\psi(2^jx-k)\}_{j,k\in \mathbb Z}\). For sufficiently large values of \(\alpha>0\), the maximal number of zeros in the interval \([-\alpha,\alpha]\) of a finite sum of the form \(\sum_{\lambda\in I} a_\lambda \psi_\lambda\) is estimated. In particular, this result provides information on the number of zeros in \([-\alpha,\alpha]\) for a finite linear combination of translates of a single function.
