    Let \(\kappa,\lambda,\mu\) be three cardinals such that (1) \(\kappa=1\) or \(\kappa\) is infinite, (2) \(\kappa\leq\lambda,\) and (3) \(\lambda\) and \(\mu\) are infinite. Then \({{ b}}_{\kappa,\lambda,\mu}\) (respectively, \( { d}_{\kappa,\lambda,\mu})\) denotes the least cardinality of any \(B\subseteq{}^\lambda\mu\) such that for every \(g\in{}^\lambda\mu,\) there is \(f\in B\) with \(| \{\xi<\lambda:f(\xi)>g(\xi)\}| \geq\kappa\) (respectively, \(| \{\xi<\lambda : g(\xi) > f(\xi)\}| <\kappa).\) The paper is a careful study of \({ b}_{\kappa,\lambda,\mu}, { d}_{\kappa,\lambda,\mu}\) and related cardinals. For instance, it is shown that (A) if \(\lambda\leq\mu,\) then for any \(g\in{}^\lambda\mu,\) there is a strictly increasing \(f\in{}^\lambda\mu\) with \(| \{\xi<\lambda:f(\xi)>g(\xi)\}| \geq\kappa,\) and (B) if \(\text{cf}(\mu) = \text{cf} (\lambda)<\lambda\leq\mu,\) then \({ b}_{\text{cf}(\mu),\text{cf}(\mu),\text{cf}(\mu)}=\) the least cardinality of any family \(B\) of strictly increasing functions from \(\lambda\) to \(\mu\) such that for every \(g\in{}^\lambda\mu,\) there is \(f\in B\) with \(| \{\xi<\lambda : f(\xi)>g(\xi)\}| =\lambda.\)
