The semilinear operator equation \(Lx+\lambda h(\lambda,x)=0\) is considered, where \(L:E\rightarrow F\) is a linear Fredholm operator of index zero, \(E\) and \(F\) are real Banach spaces, \(h:\Omega \to F\) is a continuous map in a simply connected open subset \(\Omega\) of \(\mathbb R\times E\) and the partial Fréchet derivative of \(h\) defines the continuous map \((\lambda,x)\mapsto \partial _2h(\lambda,x)\). \textit{P. H. Rabinowitz} [Rocky Mt. J. Math. 3, 161--202 (1973; Zbl 0255.47069)] proved a global bifurcation result for compact nonlinear operators. Here, based on the degree theory developed by the first two authors, it is proved the existence of an unbounded connected set \(\Sigma\) of nontrivial solutions containing a trivial solution \((0,\overline{x})\) without the compactness requirement of the operator \(h\). Reviewer's remarks: The reference on the P. H. Rabinowitz result is absent. However, there is a reference on another global result of \textit{A. Ambrosetti} and \textit{G. Prodi} [Scuola Norm. Super Pisa, Quad. 1 (1973; Zbl 0352.47001)].
