Starting from the Navier-Stokes equations with a free boundary and using an appropriate scaling, a thin film model system is derived. It is a degenerate parabolic equation of the fourth order for the height of the liquid film. This system exhibits interesting mathematical properties, an overview of which is provided. Based on these properties (energy estimates) in continuous setting, the appropriate finite element and finite volume schemes were designed. The comparison of both approaches is discussed. Various possible extensions that captures the effects of gravity, molecular interactions, thermocapillarity, surface tension, flows driven by active surface agent, are also incorporated into the model.
