This paper proves that the rank of the Néron-Severi group of the general element of various families of abelian varieties arising naturally in algebraic geometry (Jacobians, Prym varieties, intermediate Jacobians of hypersurfaces) equals one. It is an application of techniques from the theory of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure that also allows to give some dimensional bound for the subfamilies in which all elements have bigger base number.
