The author studies properties of the space NX of convex subsets of superextension \(\lambda\) X of a space X, which was first investigated by \textit{M. van de Vel} [Gen. Topology Relat. Mod. Anal. Alg., Proc. 4th Prague Topol. Symp. 1976, Part B, 477-480 (1977; Zbl 0372.54021)]. A new method for constructing NX based on the notion of maximal linked system is given [in the Russian terminology complete enchained systems]. A system \({\mathcal F}\) of closed sets is called linked if \(F\cap G\neq \emptyset\) for every F,G\(\in {\mathcal F}\). A linked system \({\mathcal F}\) is maximal if the following proposition is valid for every closed subset \(F: F\in {\mathcal F}\) iff each neighbourhood of \({\mathbb{F}}\) contains a member of \({\mathcal F}\). NX is a set of all maximal linked systems with the sufficiently natural topology. The main results are: (1) \(NI^{\tau}\simeq I^{\tau}\); (2) \(ND^{\tau}\simeq D^{\tau}\); (3) if X is a metrizable continuum then \(NX\simeq I^{\omega_ 0}\); (4) X is a \(\kappa\)-metrizable compact space iff NX is a Dugundji space. For the proofs of the theorems spectra of soft mappings are used. A few results are transferred to spaces \(N_ kX\) of k-maximal linked systems.
