The author considers the collection R(X) of the regular open sets of a topological space (X,T) and shows that (X,R(X)) is a category base [see \textit{J. C. Morgan}, Fundam. Math. 94, 13-23 (1977; Zbl 0371.54010)]. He proves that, if each open set contains a regular open set, then: (1) The category bases (X,T) and (X,R(X)) are equivalent; (2) the basic topologies generated by (X,T) and (X,R(X)) coincide. Finally he applies these results to the study of Lebesgue's density topology in R or \(R^ n\).
