Differential equations are derived which determine the smallest Lyapunov exponents. These o.d.e. arise from relationships describing the evolution of normal tensors associated with the subspaces of an n-dimensional Euclidean phase space. The derived equations are an expression in \(E_ n\) of relationships in \(E_ 3\) arising in continuum kinematics. Numerical studies indicate their utility.
