This investigation deals with the problem of transverse impact on an elastic plate for which the effect of deformation due to transverse shear cannot be neglected, e.g. a thick plate or one reinforced with aligned fibres in its plane. Closed-form solutions have been obtained, after minor approximation, to determine the deflection and bending moment at the point of impact. These solutions are independent of boundary conditions in the ``early state'' of the impact phenomenon. Further, using Hertz's contact law, it is possible to determine the history of the impact force produced when a compact body strikes the plate. It is shown that a single parameter can describe the influence of transverse shear on the impact force as well as on the deflection and bending moment at the impact point. Finally, numerical results are presented to show that the influence of shear on deflection is much smaler than that on impact force or bending moment.
