The propagation of planetary waves on an irregular seabed is studied, with the roughness modelled as a stochastic process in one coordinate. Khasminskij's limit theorem is used to determine the probability density of the wave process. The mean wave is found to have an effectively changed wave number and to decay exponentially in the direction of phase propagation. The effect of the bottom roughness is strongly dependent on the wavelength.
