The author investigates the motion of viscous incompressible fluid down an inclined plane. The fluid is bounded from above by a free surface. The main result proves the (time-) local existence of a solution of the Lagrangian formulation of the problem, given by the following equations \[ \eta (x,t)=x+\int^{t}_{0}v(x,\tau)d\tau, \] \[ \partial_ tv_ i-\gamma \xi_{kj}\partial_ k(\xi_{lj}\partial_ lv_ i)+\xi_{ki}\partial_ kp=g_ i,\quad i=1,2,3, \] \[ \xi_{kj}\partial_ kv_ j=0\quad on\quad \Omega \times (0,T), \] \[ pN_ i-\nu (\xi_{kj}\partial_ kv_ i+\xi_{ki}\partial_ kv_ j)N_ j=p_ 0N_ i,\quad i=1,2,3\quad on\quad S_ F\times (0,T), \] v\(=0\) on \(S_ B\times (0,T)\), \(v(x,0)=v_ 0(x)\) in \(\Omega\), where \(\xi_{ij}\) are the entries of the matrix \((D\eta)^{-1}=(\partial_ j\eta_ i)^{-1}\) and the meaning of other symbols is evident. The main theorem is proved using the contraction mapping principle with help of estimates of the corresponding linearized problem.
