This paper investigates the dynamics of a discrete population that is deterministically subject to slowly changing vital rates (the vital rates are ``almost constant'' during any finite time interval). Approximate closed-form expressions are proposed for the following parameters of an age-structured population: the birth and death rates, the age-specific growth rates, the age distribution, and the total population. These results, which are based on the recurrence equations of population dynamics, were tested in a realistic setting by projecting the U.S. female population subject to changing levels of fertility.
