Let p be an odd prime and \(\chi\) a Dirichlet character modulo p with \(\chi (-1)=-1\). The authors compute the dimension formula for the space of cusp forms of weight 1 for \(\Gamma_ 0(p)\) by the use of Selberg's trace formula. They apply the isomorphism between \(S_ 1(\Gamma_ 0(p),\chi)\) and the space M(-3/2) consisting of all f in \(L^ 2(\Gamma_ 0(p)\setminus \tilde H,\chi)\) such that \({\tilde \Delta}\)f\(=- (3/2)f\), \((\partial /\partial \phi)f=-i f\). Here \(\tilde H\) denotes the direct product of the upper half plane with \({\mathbb{R}}/2\pi {\mathbb{Z}}\) and \({\tilde \Delta}\) the hyperbolic Laplacian on \(\tilde H\).
