This paper deals with a class of pseudodifferential operators P(x,D) in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) with a characteristic set \(\Sigma\) in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\times {\mathbb{R}}^ n\). \(\Sigma\) is a union of two closed conic submanifolds \(\Sigma_ 1\), \(\Sigma_ 2\) which intersect transversally and \(co\dim (\Sigma_ 1)+co\dim (\Sigma_ 2)<2n\). The principal symbol is supposed to vanish exactly to the order \(M_ i\) on \(\Sigma_ i\), \(i=1,2\). Under suitable assumptions, P(x,D) is hypoelliptic with loss of \((M_ 1+M_ 2)/2\) derivatives and parametrices of \(P(x,D)-zI\) are constructed for some complex z. Suppose that P(x,D) is formally self-adjoint and let \(P_ 0\) be the operator with domain the Schwartz space \({\mathcal S}({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) which coincides with P(x,D). The closure P of \(P_ 0\) in \(L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) is supposed to be positive definite. The spectrum of P consists only of eigenvalues of finite multiplicity. Complex power \(P^ z\) is defined via the spectral resolution of P. \(P^ z\) is a pseudodifferential operator. Finally the singularities of trace \((P^ z)\) and the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of P are studied.
