    Let E be a real Banach space and let H be a Hilbert space such that E is dense in H. An orthonormal (with respect to H) sequence \((e_ n)\) is called lacunary if it generates the same closed linear subspace in E and in H. Suppose that the norm of E is of class \(C^ 2\) on \(E\setminus \{0\}\) and \(\sup_{\| x\|_ E\leq 1}d^ 2\| \cdot \| (x)(h,k)<\infty\) for each h,k\(\in E.\) Under this hypothesis the author establishes the following main results: I. If E is a separable Banach space, then any bounded orthonormal sequence of E has a lacunary subsequence. II. An unconditional basic sequence \((x_ n)\subset E\) such that \[ 0<\inf \| x_ n\|_ E\leq \sup \| x_ n\|_ E<\infty,\quad \| x_ n\|_ E\leq \alpha \| x_ n\|_ H \] is equivalent to the standard basis of \(\ell^ 2.\) Many interesting corollaries of these results are given. In the special case, \(E=L_ p\), some results of \textit{M. I. Kadets} and \textit{A. Pełczynski} [Stud. Math. 21, 161-176 (1962; Zbl 0102.322)] and \textit{V. F. Gaposhkin} [Usp. Mat. Nauk 13, No.4(82), 179-184 (1958; Zbl 0088.317)] are obtained.
