Let \(A=(A_ 1,...,A_ n)\) and \(B=(B_ 1,...,B_ n)\) be two commuting n-tuples of bounded operators acting on a Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\), and let \(L_ A\) and \(R_ B\) be the n-tuples of left and right multiplications acting on \({\mathcal L}({\mathcal H})\), the algebra of all bounded operators on \({\mathcal H}\). The authors study the question of determining the spectral picture of the (2n)-tuple \((L_ A,R_ B)\) in terms of A and B. They show that \[ \sigma_ T((L_ A,R_ B),\quad {\mathcal L}({\mathcal H}))=\sigma_ T(A,{\mathcal H})\times \sigma_ T(B,{\mathcal H}), \] \[ \sigma_{Te}((L_ A,R_ B),\quad {\mathcal L}({\mathcal H}))=[\sigma_{Te}(A,{\mathcal H})\times \sigma_ T(B,{\mathcal H})]\cup [\sigma_ T(A,{\mathcal H})\times \sigma_{Te}(B,{\mathcal H})], \] and \[ index ((L_ A,R_ B),\quad {\mathcal L}({\mathcal H}))=(-1)^ n\quad index (A,{\mathcal H})\cdot index (B,{\mathcal H}) \] (\(\sigma\) \({}_ T\), \(\sigma_{Te}\) denote the Taylor and Taylor essential joint spectra). They then obtain similar results for the restrictions of \((L_ A,R_ B)\) to norm ideals in \({\mathcal L}({\mathcal H})\), which give in particular the spectral picture of (A\(\otimes I,I\otimes B)\) on \({\mathcal H}\otimes {\mathcal H}.\) Since the results are obtained through a careful analysis of how the Koszul complexes for \((L_ A,R_ B)\), A, and B are related, one can also derive a variety of spectral formulae for other joint spectra (a sample is given in Corollary 6.10). One of the main tools used for the spectral analysis is the so-called Gap Theorem (Theorem 3.5), which allows one to replace, up to approximately unitary equivalence, a non- invertible n-tuple by an n-tuple with at least one gap in its Koszul complex. \textit{A. S. Fajnshtejn} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk Az. SSR 40, No.11, 3-7 (1984; Zbl 0586.47012)] and \textit{J. Eschmeier} [Tensor products and elementary operators, preprint 1986] have extended many of the results to the case of Banach spaces. Eschmeier, in particular, has presented an interesting dual pairings approach which allows him to cover the operator ideal case as well.
