    For block matrices A of size 2, \(A=\left[ \begin{matrix} A_ 1\\ A_ 4\end{matrix} \begin{matrix} A_ 2\\ A_ 3\end{matrix} \right]\), acting on \(H=H_ 1\oplus H_ 2\) where \(H_ 1\), \(H_ 2\) are Hilbert spaces the author considers the special subclass \(T_ 2\) where \(A_ 1,A_ 3\in S_ 1\) and \(A_ 2,A_ 4\in S_ 2\), the Schatten classes and defines \(\| A\|_{T_ 2}=\| A_ 1\|_ 1+\| A_ 2\|_ 2+\| A_ 3\|_ 1+\| A_ 4\|_ 2\) and tr A\(=tr A_ 1+tr A_ 3\). Also, for a representative sequence \((K_ n)\) of finite rank operators converging to A in \(T_ 2\)-norm the quantity det (I-\(\lambda\) A) is defined as \(\lim_{n} \det (I-\lambda K_ n)\) and it is proved that det (I-\(\lambda\) \(K_ n)\) is uniformly convergent on each compact set and the limit is an entire function and is independent of the representative sequence \((K_ n)\). This enables the author to prove that for A as above \[ \det (I-\lambda A)=\prod^{\infty}_{j=1}[(I-\lambda \lambda_ j)\exp (\lambda \lambda_ j)]\exp [-\lambda \quad tr A] \] where \((\lambda_ j)\) is the sequence of eigenvalues of A arranged in the decreasing order of their absolute values and multiplicities being also respected. Also it is shown that the theorem of Lidskii equating the trace to the sum of the eigenvalues does not hold in this generalization. Generalizations of the above result on det (I-\(\lambda\) A) are given for block matrices of size m.
