Two fascinating manuscripts in which Leibniz experiments with solving differential equations by separating variables are edited here, with English translation, introduction and carefully prepared commentary. These pages offer a most revealing glimpse into the mathematician's workshop, his trials and errors, his numerous miscalculations leading him ``into the ensuing wild goose chase'' (comment of the editor), and his personal commentary about success and failure. Such a fine example, so well edited, would also be most suitable as a source for a seminar on the history of the calculus.
