A right \(R\)-module \(M\) is called \(\pi\)-injective (also quasi-continuous) if for every pair of submodules \(N_ 1\), \(N_ 2\) with \(N_ 1\cap N_ 2=0\) each projection \(N_ 1\oplus N_ 2\to N_ i\) \((i=1,2)\) can be lifted to an endomorphism of \(M\). Clearly, every injective module is \(\pi\)-injective. A well-known result of B. L. Osofsky states that a ring \(R\) is semisimple artinian iff every cyclic right \(R\)-module is injective. As a generalization of this, \textit{V. K. Goel} and \textit{S. K. Jain} [Commun. Algebra 6, 59--73 (1978; Zbl 0368.16010)] have shown that a right non-singular ring \(R\) is a direct sum of a semisimple artinian ring and Ore domains if every cyclic right \(R\)-module is \(\pi\)-injective. In the paper the authors study (not necessarily right non-singular) rings with finite uniform dimension such that every cyclic right \(R\)-module is \(\pi\)-injective or more generally has a cyclic \(\pi\)-injective hull. The result obtained there generalize the earlier known results for semiperfect rings over which each cyclic right module has a cyclic injective hull or a cyclic quasi-injective hull. In the last section the authors obtain a characterization of semiperfect rings with nil-radical such that each proper cyclic right module is \(\pi\)-injective.
