Let K be a locally compact hypergroup with identity e and involution \(x\to \bar x\). Given an element x and a subset A of K one defines the subset xA as union of the supports of measures \(\epsilon_ x*\epsilon_ a\) where a runs through A. The first part of this paper is concerned with connectivity results for K of the following type: If \(C_ a\) denotes the connected component of \(a\in K\) then \(C_ a=aC_ e\), and \(C_ e\) is a normal subhypergroup contained in every open subhypergroup. The second subject of this paper are subhypergroups H of K that are supernormal (i.e. \(\bar xHx\subset H\) for all \(x\in K)\). Then \(K/H\) is a group. If K is abelian admitting a dual hypergroup \(\hat K\) and if S denotes the minimal supernormal subhypergroup of K then the character group of \(K/S\) is topologically isomorphic to the maximal subgroup of \(\hat K.\) The general results are applied to hypergroups admitting Sidon sets (lacunarity), to class compact hypergroups, and to the convergence of convolution powers of probability measures on hypergroups.
